2013 Scion FR-S Rolls on to the Dyno to Prove its Worth

Toyota, Subaru and Scion all tell us that their co-developed trio of rear-wheel drive sports coupes, namely the 86/GT86, BRZ and FR-S, are powered by the same 2.0-liter flat-four that produces 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft (205Nm) at the flywheel.

As is common these days with any newly launched model, independent testers, in this case, the folks over at Edmund's Insideline, strapped the North American market 2013 Scion FR-S on the dyno to see what kind of numbers it would produce.

The result was a maximum output of 173-horsepower at 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 143 lb-ft (194Nm) at about 2,800 rpm, with Edmund's noting that from 4,500 and 6,500 rpm, the Subaru-sourced engine produces a flat 140 lb-ft (190Nm). All these numbers were measured at the wheels and not the flywheel as the manufacture figures.

The news site was rather impressed with the flat four's consistency. "This car produced the most repeatable runs on the dyno of any car in recent memory, each trace overlaying the previous one precisely," said Edmunds.

The Toyota 86 TRD model features a different exhaust system plus a sports suspension package and a more powerful braking system. You can read more about TRD's offerings in our previous post here.

The video with the FR-S shows Formula Drift racer Ken Gushi tackling the straights and corners of the Laguna Seca raceway in a stock model as well as an early prototype for his GReddy Racing FR-S drift car.
