Italdesign's Brivido Concept Leaves the Show Floor and Hits the Road

Diposting oleh Unknown on Jumat, 11 Mei 2012

In contrast to the vast majority of impressive show car concepts that are either static or too fragile to be even touched, let alone be driven, the Italdesign Brivido sports coupe study is a fully functional model that was created to be enjoyed on the road.

Seen for the first time at the 2012 Geneva Auto Salon in March, the Brivido is a four-seater GT built around the platform and the 360hp V6 hybrid driveline of an unnamed VW Group model, with Road&Track magazine speculating that it could be that of the Porsche Panamera Hybrid.

The American publication had the unique opportunity to take the conceptual Gullwing-door sports car for a ride through the Alps. You can watch the drive for yourself in the video that follows below.

Diesel Preview: Five New Diesel Models Coming to America

Diposting oleh Unknown on Jumat, 13 April 2012

Mazda-Takeri-diesel

For what seems like forever, North America has been left behind when it comes to diesel cars. Sure there are a few options, but nowhere near as many as our friends in Europe. In fact, according to the Automotive Industry Data Newsletter, 52% of all new car sales last year in Western Europe were diesel powered.

Diesel engines offer unique advantages, with plenty of torque making tiny power plants more useable in small cars, while making modest size engines a functional alternative to much larger gasoline ones in SUVs. Towing, after all, is not something hybrids are known for. Additionally, diesel engines can provide fuel economy closer to that of a hybrid, without any of the worries surrounding new technology; plus, there’s no battery pack compromising passenger or storage space.

With those advantages, not to mention a push by automakers to meet increasingly strict corporate average fuel economy standards, a slew of diesel models are set to arrive on our shores in the near future. If you’re considering the switch to diesel power, here are a few options you’ll soon be able to consider.

2013-Mercedes-GLK-250-BlueTEC

Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC

The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC is a hearty four-cylindered alternative to most V6s found in crossover utility vehicles. Compared to the GLK350, the gas powered version of the German crossover, the GLK250 has 112 less horsepower, but 96 more lb-ft of torque. There’s no official EPA numbers on what the new GLK250 BlueTEC diesel will get, but last year’s European GLK diesel gets around 36 to 38 mpg in mixed driving conditions. European numbers are always much higher than EPA ones, however, so expect something closer to 30 mpg – still a very impressive rating.

Devin Lindsay, a Senior Analyst from IHS Automotive talked to us about alternative powertrains and their significance in the future. He said “Typically German manufacturers have had a presence when it comes to diesel vehicles.”  That said, the GLK250 isn’t unexpected. These next diesels, however, are.

Holden-Cruze-Hatch-CDX-Location

Chevrolet Cruze Diesel

The Cruze Eco with a standard six-speed manual transmission is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway. A member of GM’s Powertrain communications team told us that the diesel Cruze is early in development, and can’t comment on the new car’s fuel economy estimates. But rumors of its diesel have been flying, some calling it the Eco-D, with Chevrolet apparently targeting 50 mpg on the highway. Not much is known about the upcoming diesel, but if its European sales are any indication, it could be quite popular; the diesel Cruze in Europe sold 33,000 models last year. It’s also currently available in Europe as the Holden Cruze CDX (above)

2013-Cadillac-ATS

Cadillac ATS Diesel

Looking to rival the BMW 3 Series in all ways, a diesel powered version of the new Cadillac ATS is a must. At the car’s reveal at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, however, Caddy dropped a bomb, announcing that it would also offer a diesel-powered version for our shores.

If a diesel Cadillac sounds interesting to you, hopefully you’re patient. Cadillac hasn’t given a release date for the car and has only said it will be offered some time during the current model’s product cycle.

2012-Jeep-Grand-Cherokee

Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel

Jeep has been showing off its diesel powered vehicles at all the major auto shows, but always carefully mentioned that it was for Europe and Non-U.S. markets. However Chrysler recently announced that it hired an extra 1,100 workers to help get a diesel version of the Grand Cherokee to the U.S. The European-spec diesel grand Cherokee gets about 28.4 mpg combined using the European equivalent of our EPA test – again, a more lenient test. The old Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD (on sale in America from 2007 and for a few years after) got a rating of 17/22 mpg, so look for slightly higher numbers for this new model.

2011-Mazda-NDAC/MIRAI/SKYACTIV-Meeting

Mazda Skyactiv Diesel

Mazda will be bringing a diesel engine offering to the North American market for 2012 and 2013. It’s expected to make its way into several models with Mazda first showing a Skyactiv-D engine in the Takeri concept (top), which will inspire the next-generation Mazda6. It also wouldn’t be much of a surprise to tsee the same engine dropped into the new CX-5 compact crossover. Mazda expects it to get 43 mpg highway, which is quite comparable to some hybrids available on the market. Additionally, Mazda has touted start-stop technology that will help optimize fuel efficiency.

We’ve actually already driven the new Skyactiv-D engine in a prototype Mazda6 and came away thoroughly impressed. Making somewhere around 160 hp and over 300 lb-ft of torque perhaps the best feature is that it revs higher than competitors, up to 5200 rpm, with no torque fall-off, allowing it to feel more like a powerful gasoline engine.

So there you have it, five new diesel offerings heading our way, but will it make that big of a difference? According to hybridcars.com diesel take-rate in January, is still below that of hybrids, although hybridcars.com editor Bradley Berman says things are improving with, “A number of clean diesel products enjoyed higher sales as compared to a year ago.”

One thing holding back further proliferation of diesels in the US is cost, but according to Lindsay at IHS, automakers may be willing to shoulder some of that burden in order to help promote diesels in the short term as a solution to rising Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards. However, innovations in diesel are coming to a crawl thanks to CAFE standards that provide credits for electric and hybrid cars.

Lindsay helps shed some light on why European brands like BMW or Mercedes-Benz go diesel. “Diesel is still quite expensive per gallon. Since those BMWs or Mercedes-Benz owners would be putting premium gasoline, it’s not that big of a difference from diesel, which has efficiency advantages.” Some diesels also use a urea treatment which helps keep diesel emissions clean. This is an additional item to maintain and can add costs.

But more options in the market should help bring the costs down. In that regard, diesel could soon become the choice you’ll be making in your next car purchase.

GM Says Explosion at Tech Facility Injures Five, One Seriously, was Related to Prototype Battery Testing

Diposting oleh Unknown on Rabu, 11 April 2012

The explosion that occurred on Wednesday morning at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, near Detroit, and which we first told you about earlier today, resulted in the injury of five employees, one of which seriously, according to an official statement from the company.

"We are aware of five employees being evaluated on scene by medical personal and only one employee is being further treated," said GM.

A company official told the Detroit News that the employee who was seriously injured and hospitalized is expected to make a full recovery and that the injuries are non-life threatening.

GM explained that the explosion took place this morning at about 8:45 a.m. in one of the laboratories at the Alternative Energy Center and that the incident "was related to extreme testing on a prototype battery", adding that it was "unrelated to the Chevrolet Volt or any other production vehicle".

Nevertheless, several news sites including Detroit News, which cited a GM official, reported that the prototype lithium-ion battery that exploded during intensive tests was manufactured by Massachusetts-based A123.

GM has said that A123 will provide the batteries for the upcoming pure-electric version of the Spark.

While some may connect today's explosion with GM's prior problems with the Chevy Volt's batteries, others like Michelle Krebs, an auto analyst with Edmunds, says people shouldn't jump into hasty conclusions.

"Some critics will use this story to bring back to life the investigation into Chevy Volt fires from earlier this year," Krebs told CBS News. "While this incident deserves some scrutiny - especially since workers were hurt - the fact is that this is the reason why new car technology undergoes rigorous testing, to try to ensure that episodes like this don't happen on the road."

BMW i8 Spyder Concept Revealed in Video

Diposting oleh Unknown on Rabu, 04 April 2012

BMW-i8-Spyder-convertible-concept

Over the weekend BMW unveiled their i8 Spyder Concept. Today we have an additional video, showing the drop-top concept in action.

For those not in the know, the i8 is BMW’s most advanced car yet. It features a 170-hp electric motor which powers the front wheels. Powering the rear wheels is a 1.5 liter, three cylinder engine which produces 223 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque.

With numbers like that, the i8 manages a 0-60 time in about 4.9 seconds, thanks to the cars relatively light weight. It’s also very quiet, something you can witness for yourself in the video.

With the car’s fuel-economic credentials, the i8 has an all electric range of 20 miles, before the three-cylinder range extender kicks in, which will apparently achieve something close to 78.5 mpg.

Check out the concept in action in the video below.

BMW Group and Toyota Begin Co-Development of Next Generation Lithium-Ion Batteries

Diposting oleh Unknown on Selasa, 27 Maret 2012

Following an initial announcement back in December of 2011, the BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) are moving on to the next phase of their partnership inking the deal, which will see the two companies beginning a collaborative research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery cells.

"The research project being undertaken under the agreement is focusing on increasing the performance and capacity of lithium-ion battery cells through the use of new combinations of materials for cathodes, anodes and electrolytes," the two automakers said in a joint statement.

Along with the research on lithium-ion batteries, Toyota and BMW have worked out a plan for a mid-to-long-term collaboration on next-generation environment-friendly vehicles and technologies.

Furthermore, BMW has agreed to supply Toyota's European division with its 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engines starting from 2014.

Ferrari Confirms V12 Hybrid Future

Diposting oleh Unknown on Senin, 26 Maret 2012

Ferrari-V12

The future of Ferrari V12s has been secured by hybrid technology that will ensure the company can hit its CO2 targets without having to compromise on engine layout.

At the launch of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta earlier this month, Ferrari made a veiled reference to the future use of V12 engines in its range by describing the car as “the first in a new generation of V12s”.

It is understood that environmental pressures had forced Ferrari to evaluate other engine layouts, but development of the F1-derived KERS system has given it the opportunity to keep V12s in its line-up. “We will roll out new technology that is there first and foremost to introduce a green factor to our cars and ensure that we can keep our product where it is in terms of CO2,” Ferrari boss Amedeo Felisa told Autocar.

“Our hybrid system won’t just be about creating power, but saving energy, too. Yes, that technology is expensive today, but the road ahead is open and evolution will bring down the cost and weight disadvantages.
“I’m not saying when, but it is possible that this technology will be on all Ferraris. It has been designed to fit all our future architecture, and if we go ahead it will be fitted as standard. It is not the sort of thing you offer as an option.”

The firm first experimented with hybrids in the 2010 HY-KERS concept, an otherwise stock Ferrari 599 GTB with a KERS system. It featured a low-capacity electric motor at the front to drive ancillaries when running on electric power alone, and a rear-mounted one rated at 100bhp and 110lb ft. The battery cells was spread over the floorpan.

A production version of this system is first expected to be adopted in the next Enzo, which will feature a mid-mounted V12.

As part of its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions, Ferrari is also considering adopting six-cylinder engines. Felisa hinted that such engines were likely following F1’s push in that direction.

“Why not six cylinders?” said Felisa. “It is far away in the future, perhaps, but it is clear perceptions have altered. Even in the US, where until a few years ago eight cylinders was the minimum, it is clear attitudes have changed. We have to think in that direction.”

Infiniti Emerg-E Concept Leaked

Diposting oleh Unknown on Selasa, 14 Februari 2012

Dubbed Emerg-e, the concept car has so far only been teased with a handful of close-up detail shots tinted such a deep purple we were half expecting them to break out into a rendition of "Smoke on the Water" – which was, come to think of it, set just across the lake from where the concept is set to be unveiled just a few weeks from now. But we digress. The point is that a series of what appear to be patent renderings have leaked their way online to give us a much better idea of what to expect.
Though the car won’t make its public debut until next month at the Geneva Motor Show, leaked renderings have provided us an early look at the Infiniti Emerg-E concept. As seen here, the Infiniti Emerg-E wears a curved, futuristic two-door body that hides its advanced drivetrain.

The car itself is no surprise: we first heard rumors of a two-seat Infiniti electric car in September 2011. Infiniti has previously admitted that the two-seat Emerg-E concept will debut in Geneva next month with an extended-range electric drivetrain. That means that, like the Chevrolet Volt, the Infiniti will be an electric car that can use a small generator to recharge its batteries on the move.

The Emerg-E will drive almost exclusively on electrical power, and is expected to borrow the 80-kW electric motor and lithium-ion battery from the Nissan Leaf. The 1.2-liter range extender will be mid-mounted in the Emerg-E, which helps to improve the car’s balance, in keeping with the concept’s sporting intentions.

If the Infiniti Emerg-E concept evolves into a production car, don’t expect it to launch for another year or so. Parent company Nissan’s next electric offering will be an all-electric small van, which should arrive some time in 2013. A production version of the Infiniti electric car wouldn’t likely emerge before 2013 — or maybe not until 2014.

BMW 5 Series 530 ActiveHybrid

Diposting oleh Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Januari 2012

What is it?
BMW may have elected not to produce its first two petrol electric hybrid models, the Active Hybrid 7 and X6 Active Hybrid, in right-hand-drive form, but the firm has finally given British car buyers a reason to look beyond its traditional petrol and diesel-powered models with the new Active Hybrid 5, placing its steering wheel on the correct side.

When it arrives here later this month, the petrol electric Active Hybrid 5 will be priced £7920 above the highly rated 535i at £46,860 – a hefty premium, if would seem, given its moderate increase in performance, even if it is offset by improved levels of fuel economy.

The higher price also gets you greater standard equipment says BMW. Still, it remains to be seen whether the new petrol-electric hybrid, which will eventually count the upcoming Audi A6 Hybrid and Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid among its rivals, retains its value as well as its petrol engine sibling.

At the heart of the new car is BMW’s familiar turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six petrol engine, producing 302bhp and 295lb ft. It is supported by a brushless electric motor mounted in forward section of the new car’s standard eight-speed automatic gearbox and endowed with a nominal 54bhp and 155lb ft. Together, the combustion engine and electric motor provide a combined 335bhp and 332lb ft – some 33bhp and 37lb ft more than the 535i.

Energy for the electric motor is supplied by a 1.35kWh lithium ion battery produced in-house at BMW from cells purchased from US supplier A123. The 1.35kWh pack is mounted within the floor of the boot, robbing some 165 litres of nominal luggage capacity.

What’s it like?
Being a full hybrid, the Active Hybrid 5 is capable of travelling for almost 2.5 miles at speeds up to 37mph on electric power alone – albeit only on relatively flat roads and with light throttle loads only. At the slightest hint of an incline or a sharp movement of your right foot, the petrol engine kicks in to boost performance.

The whole process is achieved with reassuring smoothness and efficiency, and can even be linked to the topography feature of the Active Hybrid 5’s optional navigation system to see it provide even greater benefits, such as at the end of programmed journeys where, if the conditions permit, it automatically switches into electric mode for the final mile or so providing there is sufficient battery charge.

But while highly proficient around town, it is out on the open road where the Active Hybrid 5 really shines. Solid straight line stability, urgent in gear qualities, low levels of wind noise and excellent driveline refinement make it a consummate cruiser on the motorway.

Despite the added weight, the increased reserves ensure performance remains strong and the handling is also terrifically entertaining – something that in our experience is not always a given with hybrids. We’ve driven quite a few petrol-electric powered cars in recent years, but I can’t recall one that feels quite as well sorted and nearly as agile as this new BMW.

There’s an inherent balance and fluidity to the chassis that makes the Active Hybrid 5 a real joy to push over challenging roads. The ride is typically firm but there’s plenty of spring travel and tyre roar is exceptionally well suppressed even on extremely course surfaces – providing the Active Hybrid 5 with tremendous long-distance qualities.

Should I buy one?
The Active Hybrid 5 offers improved economy over the 535i. With a combined average of 44.1mpg, it improves on its petrol engine sibling by over 10mpg, extending its range to a theoretical 650 miles. Whether it’s enough to warrant the £7920 premium is largely dependent on your priorities, and that’s before you even consider the 535d, which returns as much as 52.3mpg.

As a sheer technology statement, though, the Active Hybrid 5 is very impressive. And that, for some, is all that will matter.

2012 Toyota Camry - The First Teaser Video

Diposting oleh Unknown on Kamis, 11 Agustus 2011

While there isn't much to see, Toyota president and CEO Akio Toyoda says the model is the "best Camry ever" and will "exceed your expectations." He also promised the Camry will be a "remarkable car in terms of handling, safety and fuel economy."

While we can’t be 100 percent sure that what we’re seeing in this amateur footage is the new Camry but given that the color of one of the vehicles depicted in the clip as well as the background seem to match the official video showing Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) President Akio Toyoda standing next to the 2012MY mid-size sedan, we wouldn’t be surprised if it is the real thing.

Toyota said it will launch the next generation of the Camry in both standard and hybrid formats this fall.

“Four all-new models will arrive before the end of the year. Leading the way, as we announced earlier this week, will be the all-new Camry and Camry Hybrid,” said Don Esmond, TMS senior vice president for automotive operations in a conference call on July1.

“The Camry will usher in a new level of product excellence for the Toyota brand, designed to meet the changing needs of the 21st Century driver. The new Camry will provide technologically advanced features, a contemporary design inside and out, improved performance and refined ride and handling,”

The Camry is America’s best selling sedan and with this new model that has tail lamps inspired from the Accord and boomerang fog lamps is fighting to regain full customer confidence. In India, the new Camry is expected in mid-2012 and will continue operating through the CBU route.

The Japanese company’s President Akio Toyoda had previously revealed that along with the Prius V minivan, the Camry will be among the first Toyota models to gain the brand’s new Entune system which will “feature simple, seamless functionality and is compatible with virtually every smart phone”.
