Dumb and Bumper: See What Happens When Newbies Try to Pull out a Jeep from a Lake

Diposting oleh Unknown on Kamis, 17 Januari 2013

One of the first things they teach you about pulling / towing a vehicle is to stay as far away as possible from the chain or rope. Then they will tell you that there's a hook placed on both ends of a vehicle where you should connect the strap.

Well, these experienced trail trackers from Brazil, did none of the above. What they did is tie a rope around the around the corner of one their Wrangler's rear bumper, with two men standing right next to the Jeep as it was trying to free the other vehicle.

Diesel Preview: Five New Diesel Models Coming to America

Diposting oleh Unknown on Jumat, 13 April 2012

Mazda-Takeri-diesel

For what seems like forever, North America has been left behind when it comes to diesel cars. Sure there are a few options, but nowhere near as many as our friends in Europe. In fact, according to the Automotive Industry Data Newsletter, 52% of all new car sales last year in Western Europe were diesel powered.

Diesel engines offer unique advantages, with plenty of torque making tiny power plants more useable in small cars, while making modest size engines a functional alternative to much larger gasoline ones in SUVs. Towing, after all, is not something hybrids are known for. Additionally, diesel engines can provide fuel economy closer to that of a hybrid, without any of the worries surrounding new technology; plus, there’s no battery pack compromising passenger or storage space.

With those advantages, not to mention a push by automakers to meet increasingly strict corporate average fuel economy standards, a slew of diesel models are set to arrive on our shores in the near future. If you’re considering the switch to diesel power, here are a few options you’ll soon be able to consider.

2013-Mercedes-GLK-250-BlueTEC

Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC

The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 BlueTEC is a hearty four-cylindered alternative to most V6s found in crossover utility vehicles. Compared to the GLK350, the gas powered version of the German crossover, the GLK250 has 112 less horsepower, but 96 more lb-ft of torque. There’s no official EPA numbers on what the new GLK250 BlueTEC diesel will get, but last year’s European GLK diesel gets around 36 to 38 mpg in mixed driving conditions. European numbers are always much higher than EPA ones, however, so expect something closer to 30 mpg – still a very impressive rating.

Devin Lindsay, a Senior Analyst from IHS Automotive talked to us about alternative powertrains and their significance in the future. He said “Typically German manufacturers have had a presence when it comes to diesel vehicles.”  That said, the GLK250 isn’t unexpected. These next diesels, however, are.

Holden-Cruze-Hatch-CDX-Location

Chevrolet Cruze Diesel

The Cruze Eco with a standard six-speed manual transmission is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway. A member of GM’s Powertrain communications team told us that the diesel Cruze is early in development, and can’t comment on the new car’s fuel economy estimates. But rumors of its diesel have been flying, some calling it the Eco-D, with Chevrolet apparently targeting 50 mpg on the highway. Not much is known about the upcoming diesel, but if its European sales are any indication, it could be quite popular; the diesel Cruze in Europe sold 33,000 models last year. It’s also currently available in Europe as the Holden Cruze CDX (above)

2013-Cadillac-ATS

Cadillac ATS Diesel

Looking to rival the BMW 3 Series in all ways, a diesel powered version of the new Cadillac ATS is a must. At the car’s reveal at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, however, Caddy dropped a bomb, announcing that it would also offer a diesel-powered version for our shores.

If a diesel Cadillac sounds interesting to you, hopefully you’re patient. Cadillac hasn’t given a release date for the car and has only said it will be offered some time during the current model’s product cycle.

2012-Jeep-Grand-Cherokee

Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel

Jeep has been showing off its diesel powered vehicles at all the major auto shows, but always carefully mentioned that it was for Europe and Non-U.S. markets. However Chrysler recently announced that it hired an extra 1,100 workers to help get a diesel version of the Grand Cherokee to the U.S. The European-spec diesel grand Cherokee gets about 28.4 mpg combined using the European equivalent of our EPA test – again, a more lenient test. The old Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD (on sale in America from 2007 and for a few years after) got a rating of 17/22 mpg, so look for slightly higher numbers for this new model.

2011-Mazda-NDAC/MIRAI/SKYACTIV-Meeting

Mazda Skyactiv Diesel

Mazda will be bringing a diesel engine offering to the North American market for 2012 and 2013. It’s expected to make its way into several models with Mazda first showing a Skyactiv-D engine in the Takeri concept (top), which will inspire the next-generation Mazda6. It also wouldn’t be much of a surprise to tsee the same engine dropped into the new CX-5 compact crossover. Mazda expects it to get 43 mpg highway, which is quite comparable to some hybrids available on the market. Additionally, Mazda has touted start-stop technology that will help optimize fuel efficiency.

We’ve actually already driven the new Skyactiv-D engine in a prototype Mazda6 and came away thoroughly impressed. Making somewhere around 160 hp and over 300 lb-ft of torque perhaps the best feature is that it revs higher than competitors, up to 5200 rpm, with no torque fall-off, allowing it to feel more like a powerful gasoline engine.

So there you have it, five new diesel offerings heading our way, but will it make that big of a difference? According to hybridcars.com diesel take-rate in January, is still below that of hybrids, although hybridcars.com editor Bradley Berman says things are improving with, “A number of clean diesel products enjoyed higher sales as compared to a year ago.”

One thing holding back further proliferation of diesels in the US is cost, but according to Lindsay at IHS, automakers may be willing to shoulder some of that burden in order to help promote diesels in the short term as a solution to rising Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards. However, innovations in diesel are coming to a crawl thanks to CAFE standards that provide credits for electric and hybrid cars.

Lindsay helps shed some light on why European brands like BMW or Mercedes-Benz go diesel. “Diesel is still quite expensive per gallon. Since those BMWs or Mercedes-Benz owners would be putting premium gasoline, it’s not that big of a difference from diesel, which has efficiency advantages.” Some diesels also use a urea treatment which helps keep diesel emissions clean. This is an additional item to maintain and can add costs.

But more options in the market should help bring the costs down. In that regard, diesel could soon become the choice you’ll be making in your next car purchase.

Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge Models Recalled Over Two Separate Issues

Diposting oleh Unknown on Senin, 09 April 2012

Recall-Chrysler-2

The Chrysler Group has issued two separate recalls for some of its 2012 models. The first one affects 1,689 Jeep Patriot and Compass crossovers built from December 17, 2011, through January 2, 2012, because of a potential problem with the fuel tank assembly's roll-over valve.

The company said that in these vehicles, the roll-over valve may be damaged and as a result, in the event of an impact or roll-over, gasoline can leak from the tank. The firm's dealers will replace the fuel-tank on all models free of charge with the recall expected to begin in June.

The second recall from the Auburn Hills carmaker involves 289 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans from the 2012 model year, manufactured from November 15, 2011, through November 21, 2011.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says some of these vehicles may be fitted with right rear hub and bearing assemblies that were not fully machined, something that could potentially lead to wheel separation.

Chrysler said that this safety recall will start in April.

2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited Review

Diposting oleh Unknown on Minggu, 01 April 2012

2012-Jeep-Wrangler-Unlimited-Feature2_rdax_646x258

The modern Jeep Wrangler body style was first introduced in 2007, and this updated platform revitalized the brand. Jeep has long had a loyal, hard-core following among off-roaders and outdoor enthusiasts, but with the introduction of the four-door Wrangler, code named JK for the current Wrangler body style, the truck went from being a fun weekend vehicle to an SUV capable of fitting the whole family.

FAST FACTS

1. New 3.6L V6 produces 285 hp at 6400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm.
2. Fuel economy is 17/21 mpg for manual, 16/20 for automatic.
3. Jeep Wrangler models starts at $22,045, with unlimited models from $25,545.

ENGINE OVERHAUL FOR 2012

In 2012, the Wrangler overhaul is completed with a new, more powerful engine that is more efficient than its predecessor.

The new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine found on the 2012 Jeep Wrangler produces 285-hp, a significant jump compared to the 202-horsepower generated by the previous engine. Along with that 40 percent increase in power is a 10 percent hike in torque to 260 lb-ft.

First introduced in the 2011 Grand Cherokee, this engine only required a different intake manifold and oil pan to adapt it to the 2012 Wrangler. Jeep engineers also replaced the four-speed transmission and fitted a new five-speed unit, with the added gear allowing for more refined shifting and gear selection in a more fuel-efficient rpm range. Off-roaders will also appreciate the lower first-gear ratio that allows the new automatic transmission to have a lower crawl ratio in off-road situations. Depending upon the model, gear ratios are available in 3.21, 3.73 and 4.10.

Perhaps most surprising, however, is a noted increase in fuel economy. The 2011 Wrangler achieved a 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway rating, while the 2012 Wrangler ups those numbers to 17/21 for the manual model or 16/20 for the automatic. That manual, a six-speed unit, is a first to be mated to the Pentastar V6 across the Chrysler lineup.

PACKAGES APLENTY

Jeep typically offers a wide variety of packages for the Wrangler, and that doesn’t change for 2012 with both Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited available in Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon packages. The Sport and Sahara models feature a driveline combination of a Dana 30 front axle and Dana 44 rear axle, utilizing a Command-Trac NV241, part-time, two-speed transfer case, which features a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. A limited-slip Trac-Lok rear differential provides added torque and traction in low-grip situations.

Those looking to do more serious off-roading might be more interested in the Rubicon package, with tunable monotube shocks, front and rear Tru-Lok locking differentials, water-fording capability as deep as 30 inches (thanks to a raised engine air intake), a sway-bar disconnect and 32-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires. The Rubicon model also features a larger Dana 44 front axle paired with the Dana 44 rear and includes a unique Rock-Trac NV241 two-speed transfer case, featuring a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio."

Looking for more customization? For the second year in a row Jeep will also offer a special edition Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 package on the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited.

FEATURES AND AMENITIES

2012-Jeep-Wrangler-Unlimited-interior-02
There are more standard and optional goodies on the Wrangler than ever before, blending the rugged Jeep capability with modern amenities found on traditional SUVs. The 2012 Wrangler features refined cabin offers available heated front seats, automatic temperature control, steering wheel-mounted controls, 12-volt accessory outlets, and a 115-volt (150-watt) AC power inverter in the console. Also available are the Uconnect system with voice recognition functions, Bluetooth streaming audio and phone connection ability, integrated navigation and SiriusXM Satellite Radio capability. It’s also equipped with steering wheel controls, automatic temperature controls, heated seats and power mirrors. The buttons on the steering wheel are well designs to make answering a phone call or adjusting the stereo volume a cinch.

The Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited come equipped with a number of safety and security features, such as standard electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, trailer-sway controls and hill-start assist (to make hill starts safer and easier). A feature found on all automatic Wranglers is Downhill Assist, which allows the driver to focus on steering the Jeep while braking is controlled electronically to help tackle off-road terrain down hill.

OFF-ROAD AND ON

Even if the Wrangler is your weekend getaway vehicle for camping, off-roading or just exploring the outdoors, it still will spend most of its life on paved road. That said, we’re happy to report the 2012 Wrangler drives comfortably around town. We drove both the four-door versions of both the Unlimited Sport and Unlimited Rubicon during our evaluation, and it was quickly evident that the new Pentastar V6 engine provides improved low-end power and torque. The five-speed transmission definitely plays its roll in the Wrangler’s improvements and compliments the new engine with smooth shift transitions at pretty much any speed.

2012-Jeep-Wrangler-Unlimited-Water

Ergonomic functions inside the Wrangler are also a nice touch. The Bluetooth phone system works well, the voice recognition understands basic commands and the integrated Garmin GPS is easy to use and will keep you on track – it worked for us even when on fire roads in the Cleveland National Forrest.

Fuel economy on the street came in at 18.5 miles per gallon on our first tank – right in the middle of the 16 city, 20 highway rating. Even when off-roading, we still average 16.5 mpg on our second tank.

2012-Jeep-Wrangler-Unlimited-Action-Rear

2012-Jeep-Wrangler-Unlimited-Action-02

Looking to test the locking differentials we took our Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon to the Cleveland National Forest. With rock-covered trails, large ruts from previous rains and even fallen trees on a few trails, we didn’t find an obstacle that slowed us down. At times, the Unlimited Rubicon made traversing uneven rocky terrain look easy. The transfer case and fuel tank skid plate shields on the Rubicon also provide added protection for the undercarriage while off-roading.

THE VERDICT

There was a time (even last year) when it was fair to say the Jeep Wrangler is not for everyone. With the addition of a new engine and continued advancements with the rest of the package, perhaps that has finally changes. While the Wrangler has always been an exceptional weekend adventure vehicle it now also does an admirable job pulling double duty as an SUV for the whole family.

Mitsubishi's Budget Mirage Supermini Enters Production

Like every year, Jeep is once again planning to wow the crowds at the 2012 edition of the Easter Safari event, which will take place in Moab, Utah, on March 31.

The Detroit company says it has prepared a total of six concept models, three of which are being teased today through these renderings.

The three Jeep studies shown here are the Mighty FC pickup truck concept, the J-12 that looks like a Wrangler fitted with the odd fascia of the 1960s Jeep Gladiator, and the Wrangler Apache.
